Afghans

Afghans--I will never understand why there are "blankets" that have holes in them. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a blanket? I guess you could say the same thing about some sweaters.

  1. We must share some sisterly traumatic experience with afghans. I hate them. I get the heebie-jeebies just thinking about them, and touching them makes me cringe. I've had several awkward moments when someone has lovingly hand-made an enormous afghan as a thoughtful gift for me. I try to be gracious without actually touching it, and then I give it to charity. Is that wrong?

For the record, Paul claims that afghans are good for adding extra weight on top of other covers.

  2. I must admit I've seen some afghans that were soft and tightly knit so that holes weren't a problem, but when it's normal yarn, they get stiff and creaky. I don't like that as much as I don't like the holes.

  3. Michelle, you and I just don't seem to agree on anything. I love afgans. I like to have weight on me when I sleep but in the summer (especially in Houston) it's much too hot for a traditional blanket. An afgan, however, has holes which allow me to feel the weight but not get too hot. Afgans: the perfect summer blanket.

  4. I can remember one nap with a good afghan experience. I woke up and thought "that actually kept me warm".

  5. I'm all about lightweight duvets for the summer. Mmmm.

  6. Afghans are not about bed time. They are for nap times, and for when you feel icky and you have strep and your throat hurts and someone loves you enough to bring you mint chocolate chip ice cream -- and wrap you in an afghan.

  7. Yeah, I guess what else I have against afghans is that I'm allergic to wool and they make me sneeze and feel itchy. So I'd rather be wrapped up in a quilt. :)

  8. Well, it has something to do with what the afghan or sweater is made out of. Being a knitter, I've learned a lot about how the fiber from one animal differs from that of another. A wool allergy, like in your case, would definitely have an impact on a good afghan experience as any knitted/crocheted item should be in a natural fiber and not icky acrylic.

I love both making and using quilts and afghans. I'll have to make you a few quilts - lap and bed size. :)
