We finally used the bus tour tickets we bought on our first day in Shanghai. The funny thing is that we've already seen most of the stops individually, so we really just enjoyed the view and the audio tour (even though the headphones mostly didn't work) and then stopped at a place we hadn't seen, Yuyuan Garden/the City God Temple. Here are some pictures.
Nanjing Lu. Always busy.
The Bund in daylight.
Our view of the streets near Yuyuan Garden from on top of the bus.
We both liked the look of this building.
Apparently "nothing but scarf" is the new style on top? ;)
KFC in a nifty old building.
I like deep massages, but I'm not sure about getting hit by a stick for therapeutic purposes. The waiting woman seemed to be unsure about it as well.
If this is the City God Temple, this must be the City God.
The obligatory "we were there" picture.
So many intricate details in traditional Chinese architecture.
The City God Temple is definitely a happening, incense-filled place.
People could watch old "movies" here.
Michael thought the giant baozi dumplings display looked delicious.
There was a cafeteria upstairs in one of the tourist buildings, and after looking at all the options, it was clear why there were very few laoweiren (foreigners) eating there.
I think this was the building where Starbucks was.
Wouldn't it be cool to live in one of those buildings? I like this traditional architecture so much more than the places most people live now.
My first stinky tofu. I agreed to try if Michael would drown it in sauce for me. It wasn't too bad, but like a lot of other things I've tried, it's probably not anything I'll be craving any time soon. It was a less intense flavor than the pig intestine I had that drove me crazy (because I couldn't get the flavor out of my mouth).
Michael was so excited to see that the tourist sweets shops had a stringy sweet he'd enjoyed in Taiwan when he was little, called "dragon mustache." Does this look more like a dragon mustache?
Or does this? If we're going by Mushu from Mulan, I'd say this is more dragon mustache-y.
He
documented my every move as I tried it. It tasted kind of nutty.
Here's the video.
Apparently my reaction was good enough, because some Japanese tourists next to us asked us where to get some dragon mustache. :)
And now we've seen most of the main Shanghai sights (excluding Jing'an Temple, which we figure is a lot like the City God Temple).
