Who's Arguing?

Writing is like acting, so why do we say "The author argues" for essays or articles? It should be, "The writing argues," shouldn't it? I totally wrote an essay that had a different opinion than my own once because there was more writing available about that side of the argument. (Yes, lazy, I know, but it was a good experience.)
