Anne Bradstreet wrote the first volume of original verse in the American colonies! I think she is most famous for the poem written to her book, her so-called "ill-form'd offspring of [her] feeble brain."
My favorites were:
"By night when others soundly slept"
"My soul, rejoice thou in thy God"
and
"My thankfull heart with glorying Tongue"
Interestingly, they are all about trials succored by God.
